If you're a fan of Indian mythology and/or Bollywood films, you need to see Lakshmi. The movie is a take on the Hindu myth about the goddess Lakshmi, who was so kind and generous that she began giving everything away for free. She soon runs out of money and is forced to find a new occupation. As Lakshmi struggles to make ends meet, her world collides with another luxurious world, that of the gods. Yes, you're supposed to sit there and watch Lakshmi hang out with Indra, Indra's wife Sachi, the sage Narada and others. This is not for everyone. It's a Bollywood flick with big production values, big names (Amitabh Bachchan plays Indra), shiny costumes and over-the-top musical numbers. The plot is convoluted even by Bollywood standards. But fans of Indian mythology won't mind too much because they'll find interesting ways to explain away all the plot holes. And it's fun to see the gods in their true, early-20th century Bollywood garb. Some critics say that Lakshmi is more like an extended extra scene for the film Drona, which was released in 2010. But this "extra" doesn't spoil the film at all. It's a different kind of movie that uses many of the same leading actors (Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukerji) and music (Ram-Lakshman-Nirmala). The movie has some great character names: Indra, Sachi, Narada and Lakshmi are easy to remember. But I wish there were more memorable characters for me to remember at the end. And I'd like for this film to be a little bit less ostentatious and overblown. That said, it's a fun film and an interesting look at one of Hinduism's oldest myths. Lakshmi (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) is a high-class call girl in India who is highly disrespectful of the gods. Her obnoxious behavior is tolerated by her clients because she provides good service and pays well. As Lakshmi struggles to make ends meet, she becomes increasingly frustrated with all the speculation about her religion and class background. She feels that her life has no meaning and that she doesn't belong anywhere in society. One night, Lakshmi dreams that she is being punished by the gods for her behavior. When she wakes up, she sees the god Indra (Amitabh Bachchan) in front of her door. He can't enter her house because he has been cursed by Sage Narada (Naseeruddin Shah). Indra tells Lakshmi about his predicament. After learning of Indra's problem, Lakshmi goes to see Sage Narada in his home in Mount Kailash. Narada is upset that Indra has lost all the prosperity he once possessed, but won't reveal why this is happening until after Lakshmi gives him a gift for "happiness". cfa1e77820
