Sarkar is a Hindi movie, made in the year 2005. The film, which was written and produced by Gulshan Kumar, has been listed as one of the best films made in India. Set against the backdrop of political clashes in a fictional city called Patna, Sarkar tells a story of how politics can affect society. The name Sarkar is derived from Sanskrit language and means "a powerful government". This piece has been rendered to keep it close to its original meaning. The original Hindi title was "Subhash Nagre", but it was changed to "Sarkar". The film takes its inspiration from the book, "Ardha Magadhi" by Dr. Ramchandra Chatterjee. The film is about a man called Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, played by Amitabh Bachchan. He is the Chief Minister of the fictional state of Patna in India, where he stands in high regard among his own people and in the country as a whole. However this reputation comes under threat when his personal life is exposed to public scrutiny. To further complicate matters, he is diagnosed with cancer shortly later. Gaekwad's influence in the state is challenged when the national Prime Minister, who is also his father in law, asks him to resign. Gaekwad refuses to resign, and decides to fight it out in the courts. Sarkar does not end happily with Gaekwad winning the case, though. The soundtrack of Sarkar contains 6 songs composed by Jatin Lalit. The lyrics of all 6 songs are written by Anand Bakshi (hindi). The film has been filmed in colour. The movie has been shot in 150 locations.Sarkar received positive to mixed reviews by critics upon its release, with much appreciation reserved towards Amitabh Bachchan's performance in the lead role; it became one of his finest performances in Indian cinema after his acclaimed performance in Mr. India (1987). Sukanya Verma of Rediff praised the film stating, "The body language of Amitabh Bachchan is used to great effect, and all this happens under three different shades of grey.". Sukanya Verma of Rediff rated it 3.5/5 and said, ""Subhash Nagre" is a political thriller, a political drama. It's also an Amitabh Bachchan film." She also appreciated the supporting cast for their roles in the making of the movie. Joginder Tuteja of Bollywood Hungama gave the movie 4/5 saying "On the whole, SARKAR is yet another wonderful film from Yashraj Films with great performances by Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, good music by Jatin Lalit and stylish direction by Ram Gopal Varma. cfa1e77820
