The Office 2010 Toolkit and EZ-Activator 2.3.2 is something that has been well worth waiting for. The first version of the Office 2010 Toolkit was released at the same time as Microsoft's last major release, Office 2007. In those days, piracy was rife and the majority of software sold on the open market was cracked with a disreputable cracker's keygen, meaning that those who were kind enough to pay for a retail license were left on a downwards slope as soon as Microsoft released Service Pack 1 or some other update which disabled their software by breaking its digital signature, rendering it useless. Microsoft's solution was to release a patch file which would force users to activate their copy of Office 2007 after installing Service Pack 1; however, this too could be avoided by using a pre-activation key which worked only for 90 days. So the toolkit was released and served many happy users: it allowed them to use all the features of Office 2007 and 2007 R2, and also provided a backup/restore facility (provided that they had a valid serial number from an original retail copy), as well as activating Microsoft Office 2010 RC0 after installation, thereby allowing people to take advantage of the Beta versions that were made available during the course of 2009. The toolkit worked perfectly until Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for Office 2010, at which point the toolkit stopped working, and the only solution was to install a beta version of Internet Explorer 8 or later in order to get the activation application to work. Microsoft's rather odd decision to allow access to a beta version of Internet Explorer meant that many users were able to take advantage of it and enjoy all the features of Office 2010 while taking no risks. However, there were some who were hesitant; they wanted the extra features that the new software offered (new file format, new interface) but they did not want to risk their system with an unfinished product: after all, SP1 was only available on MSDN and TechNet at first. With the release of the Office 2010 Toolkit and EZ-Activator 2.3.2, everyone can now benefit from these new features (the changes are described below); moreover, the toolkit has added a new feature not seen in previous versions: it contains an application that will show you whether or not your copy of Office is genuine, and will help you install a valid serial number if it isn't. The following changes apply to all versions of Office 2010 (Home and Business, Professional, Academic and Ultimate) except for Office Standard 2010 (only available through OEMs); the changes apply specifically to the 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Windows Vista SP1 or SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP1 or R2, and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. This feature requires installation of an Internet Explorer 8 (or later) beta. The reasons why can be found in this FAQ; however it should be noted that the EZ-Activator utility will work after installation even without Internet Explorer 8.
